Back in the day, it wasn't easy for criminals to make money from computer crime. Consequently most virus were destructive and just erased your drive. Then the internet arrived and criminals found they could extract money via blackmail. Now it looks like the criminal underworld have gone full circle with the 'CryWiper' Trojan. Originally found in Russia it now appears to be spreading to personal computers across the world. Once infected the Trojan disables certain facilities relating to connectivity then renames all your files with a '.cry' extension essentially rendering them unreadable. There is no fix for this and although you can remove the Trojan you can't recover the files. More about the Trojan can be found here:
